Applying Study Visa

Applying for a study visa can be a complex and daunting process, but with careful planning and preparation, it can be a successful and rewarding experience. The following are some steps that can help individuals apply for a study visa.

Step 1: Understanding the immigration requirements

Before applying to a Canadian educational institution, you must first understand the various requirements for schools and the courses they offer. Candidates must also carefully examine the rules and regulations governing the study visa application process.

Ideally, you should begin planning for your Canadian study permit at least a year in advance. All the universities and institutions require an updated passport, proficiency in either English or French, proof of passing prescribed language tests with minimum grades/bands, and proof that you can finance your studies and stay in the country. These requirements may vary between provinces, which is why this step must be performed carefully and systematically.

Step 2: Select your program and university/college

The first step in selecting an institution is to determine its designation i.e., the selected institution should be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Foreign students can only be admitted via DLIs. You can also change your chosen program in later phases, but it is better to search and compare your study options before the selection of your interested program.

Step 3: Take the Language Proficiency Test

Every international student who wishes to study in Canada must demonstrate fluency in either English or French. The IELTS exam is the preferred test for English proficiency, but some institutions also accept the Cambridge English: Advanced or TOEFL exam score for checking the eligibility of a candidate.

Although the TEF exam is the most common exam for checking proficiency in the French language, you can also attempt DALF, DELF, or TCF exams. So, accordingly, choose the test, pay the fee, and reserve your dates well ahead of time to avoid the last-minute rush.

Step 4: Search, Compare and Apply to your desired university and program

After achieving the required bands or scores in language proficiency tests, you should now contact the universities on your list, collect their application packs, and submit them well in advance. It is beneficial to apply to at least a dozen universities, but you should also keep in mind the application fee which ranges from CAD 100 to 250.

Applying randomly is not a good option at all. So, compare your options, identify your preferred course/university, and choose one or two backup options in advance.

Fill out the application form carefully and provide accurate information supported by documentary evidence and then wait for your acceptance letter from the particular university. Your acceptance letter will play an important role in the further process.

Step 5: Apply for a Study Permit with proper documentation

Now that you've found an institution that will accept you, it's time to apply for a Canada Study Permit. You can apply online or in-person at your nearest visa application center. Your application must be supported by the acceptance letter, your passport, and documentary proof to show that you have sufficient financial resources to support your stay and study in Canada.

If you apply to a Quebec institution, you will also receive a "Certificat d'acceptation du Québec" along with your acceptance letter (CAQ). Attach this document with your study permit application.

Step 6: Plan your journey after successful application and interview

The immigration officer will decide on your application only after its successful processing and your interview. If your application is accepted, you can start planning your journey to Canada.

Your permit will contain a start date at which it becomes effective and you will not be able to enter Canada before this date. So, make your travel plans accordingly.

Step 7: Now, it’s time to enjoy your stay and study in Canada

Before allowing you to enter Canada, the immigration officer will verify your permit and other documents at the port of entry (POE). It is the last step in the immigration process, and you can now concentrate on your study programs and further requirements as an international student in Canada.
